Project Overview --

Some of the most important historical documents in the Department of Archives & Special Collections can be found in the Archives Files. This collection consists of materials relating to the early history of Vassar College, from its founding in 1861 to the early years of the 20th century. Of special note is a group of about 200 photographic images. The images provide visual documentation of Raymond Avenue, college buildings and buildings relating to Matthew Vassar, class groups, faculty, presidents, students, trustees, Vassar Lake, and Matthew Vassar and his relatives.

Images of Early Vassar makes available all of the photographs in the Archives Files collection. The photographs have been fully cataloged and users may search them in a variety of ways. Most users will find the subject searching to be quick and useful. Chosen images may be viewed and manipulated using the accompanying Image Viewer software.

It should be noted that Archives & Special Collections houses many other collections, some featuring other images relating to the early history of the school. In time we hope to add these images to the database. In the meantime, researchers interested in related themes and topics should contact department staff directly.
